Ethical considerations when engaging adolescents in research, monitoring and evaluation activities
This guidance note builds on Oxfam’s existing resources on research ethics and safeguarding policies, providing an overview of ethical considerations specific to adolescent participation in research, monitoring, and evaluation activities. Soliciting information from adolescents requires special considerations, particularly when asking about sensitive issues such as gender-based discrimination, experiences of violence, or sexual and/or reproductive health. The intent is to mitigate potential risks and consequences to children and youth as a result of their participation in the study or evaluation.
The document will prepare research teams to center the best interests of the child in the study design, risk and safety planning, data collection, and at all other key decision-making points. The guidance note is available in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.
