Five years ago, women’s rights actors from around the world gathered in Vancouver to attend the 2019 Women Deliver conference. Following years of advocacy by Oxfam Canada and our allies, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to the stage to announce a major 10-year funding commitment to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in the Global South.
Over the past few weeks, campuses have erupted with calls for peace and justice as Pro-Palestinian student-led protests and encampments have sprung up across Canadian universities from Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, and Toronto to Montreal.
More than 28 million people across East Africa in Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan and Kenya are on the brink of famine as a result of climate change, ongoing conflicts, and the high cost of living. Women and girls are often among the most affected – mothers will miss meals so their children can eat, and girls are forced to sacrifice their education to care for their families while their parents search for food. As part of Oxfam’s response to the East Africa hunger crisis, we’re working with local partner organizations to implement cash assistance programs in order to meet local needs immediately and appropriately.
