Return of Parliament for the Fall Session

September 16, 2024

As Parliament returns, Oxfam Canada looks forward to working with Members of Parliament to prioritize the most pressing issues that affect the most vulnerable communities, both in Canada and globally. We are living in a time of unprecedented challenges: from deepening global hunger and rising income disparity to escalating climate change impacts, humanitarian emergencies, and the rising number of refugees and migrants.

We are at a critical moment where bold and compassionate leadership is needed to address the growing inequalities and crises that continue to threaten decades of progress but also the well-being of millions.

Our Priorities for the Fall Session:

  1. Championing Gender Equality: Women are on the front lines of the fight against poverty, yet they are often the most affected by economic barriers, climate change, and conflict. We must invest in women’s economic empowerment, support gender-responsive programming, and ensure that women’s voices are at the heart of decision-making processes.
  2. Strengthening Humanitarian Assistance: With conflicts, climate disasters, and economic instability on the rise, humanitarian needs are at an all-time high. Oxfam Canada calls on the government to increase its commitment to humanitarian assistance, ensuring swift and adequate support to those affected by crises worldwide.
  3. Addressing the Global Hunger Crisis: The world is facing a catastrophic hunger crisis, fueled by conflict, climate change, and economic inequality. We urge Canada to increase its international assistance, particularly to address acute hunger in the hardest-hit regions.
  4. Tackling Climate Change with Ambitious Action: Canada has a critical role to play in the fight against climate change. Climate change disproportionately affects the poorest and most marginalized communities. Oxfam Canada calls on the government to deliver on its climate finance commitments and to champion policies that support a just and inclusive transition to a green economy.
  5. Supporting Fair and Equitable Tax Systems: To address widening income inequality, Canada must advocate for and implement fair and equitable tax systems that ensure the wealthiest individuals and corporations pay their fair share, here at home and globally.  It is time to prioritize people over profits.

The challenges we face today are interconnected, and the solutions must be too. Oxfam Canada looks forward to working with the government, opposition parties, and civil society partners to advance these priorities. Together, we can create a fairer, more equitable world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
