Fridays for Future Climate March
Oxfam Canada was proud to march alongside young climate activists, environmental advocates, and concerned Canadians in the Ottawa Climate March organized by Fridays for Future Ottawa.
The #FridaysforFuture is a youth-led and organized movement that began in August 2018, after 15-year-old Greta Thunberg and other young activists sat in front of the Swedish parliament every school day for three weeks, to protest against the lack of action on the climate crisis.
As an organization dedicated to fighting inequality and poverty, Oxfam Canada recognizes that the climate crisis is one of the greatest injustices of our time. It disproportionately impacts the world’s poorest communities—especially women and girls—who are least responsible for climate change but bear the brunt of its effects. We know that the climate crisis is driven by the wealthiest 1% and the biggest corporations who are plundering the planet and polluting for profit.
Climate change isn’t a distant threat – it’s here, and it’s urgent. But there’s hope. We have the solutions to tackle the climate crisis right now; we just need climate culprits to pay up so we can scale up these solutions.
This November, the UN Climate Summit in Azerbaijan is a crucial opportunity to make rich countries and polluters step up and finance the fight. This isn’t just about money, it’s about justice.
Communities on the frontlines are paying the price, while the biggest polluters from companies to governments continue to profit. We need a global climate deal that ensures rich polluters pay their fair share, directing funds to those that need it the most.
