Women in Canada and around the world are disproportionately concentrated in the lowest paid and most undervalued jobs and earn significantly less than men. Multiple layers of discrimination further exacerbate the economic insecurity of Indigenous, racialized, immigrant, refugee and 2SLGBTQ+ and women with disabilities. The government met a major milestone in 2018 with the passing of the Pay Equity Act to address the wage gap in federally regulated sectors. It also made some changes to employment insurance and the Labour Code which will advance women’s economic equality. Yet more is needed to ensure women everywhere in Canada have access to decent work and living wages.
